British Foreign Office has included 11 more countries to its official alert roster about the threats of methanol contamination from tainted beverages.

The expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of methanol toxicity.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, in response to several high-profile incidents such as the deadly demise of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that even small amounts of methanol can cause blindness or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical commonly used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for human consumption.

Although it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to low, safe levels for drinking through the purification method.

Yet in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into beverages to save money, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to identify.

Government Advice for Travelers

Government minister a senior official stated that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, stick to trusted places and avoid local brews or free shots," Falconer advised.

"If something appears suspicious, like a hangover that's far more intense than usual or sight issues – get medical help fast."

The full roster of nations listed as posing a risk of methanol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
